Nahki Wells and Luton Town will be hoping to claim a major scalp tonight when they play Premier League side Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Although the Hatters are the underdogs heading into the David versus Goliath cup-tie, the Bermuda striker is adamant they can be equal to the task.

“It’s a competition that we want to try and progress, and we will go there and give it our all and try to leave entering the next stage,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“They need to win and it’s a free hit for us, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The former Bermuda captain earned a runners-up medal in the competition when League Two side Bradford City lost to Premier League opponents Swansea City 5-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium in 2013.

Luton virtually had things all their own way in a 3-0 victory over Sky Bet League Two side Gillingham in the first round at Kenilworth Road on August 8.

Wells is off to a strong start to the season after netting two goals and creating an assist in three appearances for Luton to date.

Also involved in Carabao Cup second-round action this week was Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City exited the competition after losing 2-1 at home to Championship rivals Norwich City on Tuesday night.

Bluebirds manager Brian Barry-Murphy made six changes to his starting XI from the one that battled to a 2-2 draw away to Derby County in an exciting league clash three days earlier, with the Bermudian goalkeeper among those retaining their spots.

The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges at Cardiff City Stadium, with Isaak Davies nearly poking home fellow forward Callum Robinson’s low cross and midfielders David Turnbull and Alex Robertson both shooting just wide from distance.

Both teams continued to create chances before the visitors took the lead in the 25th minute when forward Dane Mathias Kvistgaarden headed past Trott from a corner to earn the Canaries a one-goal advantage at the break.

The visitors went close to grabbing a second after the restart when a stray header crashed off the Bluebirds crossbar as both sides continued to battle and create chances at either end of the pitch.

The Canaries were singing again after midfielder Ante Crnac doubled their lead in the 78th minute with a contentious strike, sliding a low cross past Trott following Joel Bagan’s dispossession, with calls for a foul on the City left back waved off.

Forward Yousef Salech pulled one back for the home side in the third minute of stoppage time to halve the deficit. However, that was as close as the Bluebirds would get as they ran out of time in search of an equaliser.

Barry-Murphy’s side enjoyed a good run in the competition last season, reaching the quarter-finals where they lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea.
