Curtis Dickinson has emphasised how the island is carried forward by the efforts of its work force, in a Labour Day message.

The Progressive Labour Party leadership contender and former finance minister said Bermuda is lifted by “the hands that build our homes and communities, the people who care for our families, keep our businesses moving, serve our neighbourhoods and contribute to the life of our island”.

He added: “Their work is our shared foundation. Their solidarity is our shared strength.

“Solidarity means standing together, making room for one another and listening even when conversations are difficult. It means remembering that what unites us must always be greater than what may separate us. The labour movement has taught us that lesson for generations.”

Mr Dickinson stressed how progress was born out of ordinary people who walk together, “standing together when it would have been easier to stand apart”.

“This Labour Day, we are honoured to stand alongside the Bermuda Trade Union Congress and our brothers and sisters throughout Bermuda’s labour movement in the continuing pursuit of fairness, dignity, respect and equality for every worker. Solidarity needs all of us.

“It asks us to listen. To understand. To reach across differences. To stand when it is uncomfortable and to help one another stand when someone feels like falling.

“There will always be moments that test our unity. It is in those moments that we must remember who we are, what we share, and how much stronger we are when we find our way forward together.

“Bermuda, labour is at the foundation of our country’s success. Generations of working people have built this country through their hands, sacrifice, courage and determination.

“Today, we honour them. We thank them and we recommit ourselves to walking together.

“With respect. With dignity. With unity. And always, in solidarity.”
