The Bermuda Police Service reported 24 arrests during the Labour Day holiday weekend, with traffic offences, including drink-driving, remaining “worryingly high”.

A spokesman added: “Troublingly, four of those were for impaired driving, with the highest breathalysed reading being three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

“Speeding continues to be an issue with more than 30 tickets issued for that offence. Overall, close to 100 tickets were issued for traffic offences, ranging from illegal parking to underage driving and operating unlicensed and uninsured vehicles.”

As the BPS continues with “repeatedly announced high-visibility policing”, Acting Chief Inspector Anthony Smith said the holiday was “a relatively quiet one with no major incidents reported”.

“However, drink-driving and speeding, two of the three major causes of road traffic collisions, inattention being the third, remain worryingly high.”

He added: “While our officers have a responsibility to reduce road harm through enforcement, road users must also take responsibility for their actions.

“One person’s inattention or driving while impaired or speeding could result in a life-altering injury or loss of life.”

Additional arrests were listed as two for actual bodily harm, a single breach of a domestic violence protection order and two arrests for common assault.

There were single arrests for dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified by age, for offensive or threatening words or carrying an offensive weapon, for theft greater than $1,000 and for trespassing.

There were seven arrests for warrants.

Police reported single arrests for importation of a controlled drug, for possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply and for burglary.
