Work around an East End lighthouse is to take its next steps after a telecommunications tower was built.

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment said telecommunications equipment in the St David’s Lighthouse will be moved to the new structure before refurbishments can get started next year.

Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said he recognised the public’s eagerness to restore the lighthouse, but called the tower an “important step forward”.

He said: “It provides the infrastructure needed to relocate the equipment currently housed at the lighthouse and allows us to move closer to beginning the restoration itself.”

Mr Adams added: “Once the lighthouse has been cleared, our officers will be in a better position to fully assess the structure and determine the work that needs to be done.

“The completion of the new tower structure represents tangible progress and clears the way for the next phase of work.”

Work on the new tower will include building a shelter and generator pad, expected to be completed by December.
