The featured speaker at a networking dinner for the island’s medical sector this week will give a talk about advances in genetics.

Carika Weldon, the CEO and founder of CariGenetics, will discuss what genetic testing is revealing about medication safety, previously unidentified disease risks and the potential implications for patient care in Bermuda.

Dr Weldon’s presentation at the Docs for Dinner event at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club will be followed by a presentation on advances in diagnostic imaging

The event on Thursday, which starts at 6.30pm, will be hosted by Bermuda Healthcare Services.

Attendees will receive free pharmacogenetics testing in which a cheek swab will provide information about the safety of using more than 200 medications across 20 medical classes.

In a second presentation, BHCS will showcase the clinical capabilities of its new Siemens MRI machine, which include AI-enabled acquisition, accelerated scan protocols, high-resolution 3D imaging and features designed to improve patient comfort.

Ewart Brown, the former premier and founder and executive chairman of BHCS, said: “This Docs for Dinner will give physicians practical insight into how advances in genetics and diagnostic imaging can inform clinical decisions.
