Nominations sought for King’s Honours
Government House has invited the public to help identify those worthy of being included on the International Honours List.
A spokesman said that nominations are being sought for potential recipients of the King’s Certificate and Badge of Honour, or those to be recognised as part of the King’s Overseas and International Honours List.
The honours list is made up of a series of substantive awards for UK citizens and citizens of Commonwealth countries where the King is the head of state.
Honours range from knighthood, recognising those who have made major contributions at a national level, to the British Empire Medal, with awardees appointed for significant community service
Nominations for the honours list are decided by a committee in Britain, with the recommendations going to the Prime Minister and then the King, who bestows the accolade.
Knight or Dame of the British Empire: Awardees are appointed who have made major contributions to any activity, usually at a national level
Commander of the British Empire: Given to those who play a prominent but lesser role at a national level through achievement or community service
Officer of the British Empire: Awardees are appointed for having a major role in any activity through achievement or service to the community
Member of the British Empire: Given for outstanding achievement or service to the community which has had a significant, long-term impact and stands out as an example to others
British Empire Medal (presented locally): Awardees are appointed for hands-on community service that has made a significant difference
Meanwhile, the King’s Certificate and Badge of Honour is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life or committed themselves to serving or helping Bermuda over a sustained period.
Nominations are considered by a local honours committee, who make recommendations to the Governor through the Premier.
A spokesman said anyone can nominate someone for an honour, with forms available online at gov.bm/governor-bermuda, but nominees should never be told they are being nominated or considered.
The spokesman added: “Nominations must be accompanied by two letters of support.
“These letters should ideally provide information to add to or strengthen the information in the nomination. Letters and nominations from non-family members are more likely to carry greater weight with the committee.”
Completed nomination forms, together with two letters of support, must be sent no later than October 23 via e-mail to governmenthouse@gov.bm.
