A man was arrested yesterday for possession of a knife and drugs, police said today.

The items were seized when traffic checks took place in the area of Barnes Corner, Southampton.

Officers had reason to stop a motorcycle carrying two people at about 12.20pm on Tuesday, the Bermuda Police Service said.

The pillion passenger, a 20-year-old male, got off the bike and police spotted a belt clip that appeared to hold a folding knife.

Officers carried out a search of the man and recovered a knife in his waistband. The item was seized and he was arrested for having a bladed article in a public place.

A further search uncovered several paper twists containing suspected controlled drugs.

The man was arrested for possession of controlled drugs and he was taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained.

Superintendent Arthur Glasford, of the tactical division, said: “Traffic abatement operations may involve speed checks as well checks for compliance with traffic laws, but during these operations officers are also on the lookout for persons who may have illegal items in their possession.

“These include weapons and drugs.”

He added: “There have been a number of persons found with knives and other bladed or pointed weapons in their possession.

“Please be advised that persons found in possession of these items without lawful excuse will be arrested and brought before the courts.”
