A young Bermudian pursuing geology studies overseas has received $20,000 in funding through the energy bursary award scheme of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

D’Angele Symonds, who was recognised for her academic achievements, leadership qualities and commitment to the island’s sustainability, received the funding for the 2026-27 school year.

A government spokeswoman said Ms Symonds demonstrated a passion for sustainable development and renewable energy, with a clear vision for applying her qualifications to support Bermuda’s energy transition, environmental stewardship and infrastructure resilience.

The young Bermudian will pursue a master’s degree in engineering geology at the University of Portsmouth in Britain.

It will build on expertise from her undergraduate studies, with advanced skills in geotechnical investigation, ground stability assessment, infrastructure planning and environmental risk management.

She graduated recently from Keele University in England with a bachelor’s degree in geology and physical geography, earning first-class honours.

While at Keele, she advocated for her peers as a student voice representative and held a leadership position at the geological society.

The spokeswoman said the roles highlighted her ability to lead, collaborate and contribute positively to her academic community.

Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs, congratulated Ms Symonds and said she had “worked hard, demonstrated leadership and shown a clear desire to use her education to contribute to Bermuda”.
