Upper House backs handover of land for housing
Senators agreed that a plot of land can be handed over by the Government to be used for a new affordable housing development in Southampton.
The Bermuda Land Management Corporation Amendment Act 2026 offers a section of the Morgan’s Point site to the Bermuda Land Management Corporation.
Members of the Upper House agreed to release the 0.8 hectare portion to the quasi-autonomous government organisation.
The handoff, part of the Bermuda Affordable Housing Strategy 2025-35, would be used to build Dr Cann Park II with 110 new residential units.
Lauren Bell, a government senator, said: “This government has made it clear that increasing the supply of affordable housing remains one of our highest priorities.
“We know that too many Bermudians continue to struggle with housing costs.
“We are committed to using every appropriate tool available to us to expand housing opportunities across the island.”
The development will be for seniors as well as families.
After being asked for more details on the technical aspects of the project, Ms Bell said planning and financing were still being finalised.
She said: “I can confirm that the number of families and individuals seeking access to affordable homes is close to 600 at this point.
“Dr Cann Park is being designed with the needs of seniors in mind, but we also recognise that there is that great need, so we're still in the process of deciding the actual make-up of who will have access to this property.
“The building is designed to be approximately 110 units, with one-bedroom affordable units primarily for rent to seniors.
“However, there are a few units being designed for younger tenants, and the final decision on that has not yet been made.
“Once that decision has been made, we will come back and give you an update.”
It was also revealed the project’s timeline was going to be approximately ten months, while contractors with modular and precast experience were being considered for the work.
