Free robot-building workshop for young coders
A free robot building and block coding workshop for children ages nine to 14 will be held at Connectech Coding next week Saturday afternoon.
Registrants get to learn from the Bermy Bots, Bermuda's National Robotics Team, over a three hour session. The team heads to Atlanta soon for its first competition of the season and they can be followed @Connectechbda on Instagram.
Connectech Coding said they are supporting the team’s outreach to the community and they are hoping to see Bermuda’s “future engineers, tinkerers, and kids who take apart the TV remote just to see how it works”.
The non-profit technology education charity equips Bermuda's young people with coding, robotics and 21st century skills.
A statement from the company said: “Robotics is a competitive sport, complete with teamwork, strategy, game day nerves and a cheering crowd.
“But unlike most sports, it is one where every kid can go pro. The players of today become the engineers, programmers and innovators of tomorrow.
“First, the global robotics programme the Bermy Bots compete in, calls it ‘the only sport where every kid can go pro’, and this workshop gives Bermuda's youngest players their first shot at the starting line-up.”
The workshop, for which spaces are limited, is the team’s own community service initiative. With Connectech's support, the students planned it from start to finish, right down to designing the event graphics.
Young participants will build their own robot, learn the basics of block coding, and watch their creations roll to life, all coached by teens who compete on the international robotics stage.
Coral Wells, executive director of Connectech Coding, stated: “Our Bermy Bots could have spent their Saturday building robots for themselves, and instead they chose to build up the next generation.
“These students are philanthropists in the making, and we could not be prouder of them.”
She added that no experience or equipment is necessary for those attending the free workshop at Sofia House on Church Street, only curiosity and an open mind.
