Sewer and drainage repairs at a public school for children with learning challenges have been completed and students will return on Monday, the Ministry of Education has confirmed.

Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy closed without warning last Thursday after drainage concerns were found to be affecting operations.

The education ministry said repair work was finished on Friday and the Devonshire school, which serves students aged 4 to 18 with moderate to profound challenges, would be open as normal after the midterm break.

A ministry spokeswoman said: “The academy was closed last Thursday and Friday for urgent sewer and drainage repairs, which were finished on 16 October.

“Every year, the Department of Education offers camps for Hope Academy students during the Easter, Summer, and Christmas breaks. Camps are not offered during the October midterm break, as staff are engaged in professional development.

“We apologise to Hope Academy families for any inconvenience caused by last week's urgent closure. The department and Hope Academy staff are looking forward to welcoming students back on Monday.”

The school previously closed in 2024 when staff downed tools over safety concerns.
