Erica Hawley produces fastest bike leg in strong Korea field
Erica Hawley produced the fastest bike leg in the field as she finished thirteenth in the World Triathlon Cup Tyongyeong in Korea.
Hawley crossed the line in 57min 31sec, just 49 seconds behind winner Xinyu Lin, from China. Her compatriot Anqi Huang (56:45) finished runner-up with Mathilde Gauthier, from France, taking third spot (56:47).
The Bermudian completed the 750-metre swim in 9:11, exiting the water in 34th place but it was on the bike leg that Hawley excelled, taking risks in the wet conditions to finish with the fastest time on the 19.8km bike leg of 29:47. She completed the 5k run in 17:21
The race was the second in an Asia-Oceania swing for Hawley as she chases valuable points in the race to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The 26-year-old finished seventeenth in China last week and will now head to Japan to compete in the World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki on November 14 before finishing her year in New Zealand by taking part in the World Triathlon Cup Tauranga on a week later.
It is a busy time for Bermuda’s elite triathletes with Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby champion Tyler Smith heading to South America to race in the World Triathlon Cup Iquique, in Chile, on November 7
