More than 300 customers lose power during wet weekend
Adverse weather conditions across the island resulted in scattered power outages at the weekend.
Shelly Leman, managing director of Belco, said: “On Sunday, inclement weather and gusty winds caused several pockets of outages across the island, including an outage impacting just over 300 customers in Paget near the Bermuda College.
“This outage, like most outages this weekend, was caused by trees and foliage on private property coming into contact with overhead lines.
“Belco crews responded as outages occurred, cut and cleared trees where needed and restored power to affected customers as safely and quickly as possible.”
Ms Leman reminded property owners that they are responsible for keeping vegetation cut back at least ten feet from Belco power lines.
She added: “To schedule a temporary disconnection so trees can be trimmed safely, please contact Belco at 295-5111 or info@belco.bm at least three weeks before the planned work.”
During the bad weather, Belco warned that temporary fixes could mean a further disruption in the power supply as teams worked on a more permanent solution.
The company said: “When our crews are dispatched to address these outages, they must consider multiple factors, two of which include the safety risks posed by the winds and weather being experienced in the moment, and they must restore power to the customer as quickly as possible.
“Sometimes these considerations mean the power is being restored on an emergency basis with a temporary solution.
“In these instances, our team makes note of the requirement for an additional visit to implement a more permanent solution.
“When the wind/weather prove relentless, as is our situation currently, the temporary solution may have to be implemented more than once.
“This means some customers may experience the same outage more than once, requiring our crews to restore power multiple times.”
Customers were warned to use caution near working crews, and reminded to unplug all sensitive equipment and electronics during an outage.
