Grief charity urges co-ordinated response to crime
A grief charity has called for a “co-ordinated plan” with input from stakeholders to prevent violence and support victims.
The Gina Spence Programme said the group was saddened by “all those grieving the recent violence”, including those affected by the death of a 17-year-old after a shooting incident in Pembroke on October 14.
It also offered condolences to the relatives of 39-year-old Lindley Scott Jr, who was fatally stabbed at Southampton Rangers Sports Club a few hours earlier.
The charity said Bermuda could no longer accept “these traumatic incidents as our norm”.
It said: “We are losing our children, fathers, friends and neighbours, leaving families devastated and our community hurting.
“The police and government cannot do this alone. We need a co-ordinated plan involving families, schools, churches, charities and businesses to prevent violence and support those affected.”
The Gina Spence Programme said the organisation’s work constituted part of the response.
A statement added: “HealingHearts supports grief recovery; GriefConnect connects people with support; Champions provides ongoing care for children who have lost a parent to homicide; and Helping Children with Loss equips adults to support grieving children.”
The charity urged people grieving the loss of a loved one and who may need help and support to contact its office at 296-0016.
It added: “Our young people deserve to grow older. Turning our collective grief into sustained action must be a shared priority. No heart should grieve alone.”
Over the weekend, a police spokesman said an investigation into the Curving Avenue shooting had transitioned into a murder inquiry.
Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, earlier said that officers had detained a young male in connection with the incident, which took place at about 10.45pm on October 14.
While the incident took place in Pembroke, witnesses were sought in the Hamilton Parish area.
Police were initially interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen “suspicious persons and/or vehicles” in the area of Harrington Sound Road and Wilkinson Avenue between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.
Members of the public were urged to provide information to Detective Sergeant Odessa Philip, of the Serious Crime Unit, on 717-2193, 247-1739 or ophilip@bps.bm.
The shooting was also three days after a man suffered a serious head wound in a shooting at a Hamilton Parish residence.
A man has been charged in relation to the stabbing incident at Southampton Rangers Sports Club.
