Leseur fires his way into the history books at Mid Ocean Club
Kenny Leseur made history after becoming the first back-to-back Moongate Tour champion at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
The defending champion had his work cut out trailing Order of Merit leader Adam Perry by 50 points heading into the final medal event of the season and was equal to the task.
Leseur shot 74 in trying conditions to finish tied for second at three over, which was enough to overhaul Perry and become the first player to retain their title in Tour history.
“Happy to win overall for the season,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“I have been consistent for the last two and a half years playing pretty well, so I think that speaks to that as well because it’s a season long race with these being one day events. It’s a lot of rounds that put together for it, and over the eight or nine rounds we played I came out on top.”
The 22-year-old professional was in contention for a second win of the season but ultimately came up just short.
“I didn’t come out today with any expectation and hit the ball pretty decent in tough conditions with the on and off rain,” Leseur said.
“I had a putt on 14 for birdie and then hit a couple of loose drives on six and 16 that resulted in double bogeys. But other than that I felt I played pretty consistent.”
There was also cause for celebration for amateur James Godwin who picked up his first win in only his second Moongate Tour appearance after shooting 73 to finish one shot clear of the field at two over.
“You don’t win in golf very often so it’s good to get a win. Started really bad but finished strong,” he said.
“Got a little one at home, so golf is maybe second or third. But it’s nice to get a win and always nice to be at Mid Ocean as well.”
Also finishing tied for second at two over with Leseur was fellow professionals Nick Jones and Chaka DeSilva, the Moongate Tour cofounder.
The top 18 players and ties in the Order of Merit all qualified for the season-ending Moongate Tour Championship.
