<Bz49>Cougars blitz Rangers on soggy day
Devonshire Cougars 5A four-goal, second-half blitz saw Devonshire Cougars cruise into the FA Cup quarter-finals at a wet and muddy Southampton Oval yesterday.
Not once were Cougars ever troubled by their hosts. And once skipper Kwame Steede netted the first of two goals to put his side ahead for good, the Big Cats strolled the rest of the way to victory without hardly breaking a sweat.
Cougars opened their account in the 22 minute when Steede was tripped up in the box. Raymond Beach’s casually taken spotkick was saved by Rangers ‘keeper Gerald Simons, but the alert Steede was on hand to hammer home the rebound to spare his team-mate’s blushes.
But Beach would make amends early in the second half when he netted twice inside a minute to put the match well beyond the home team’s reach.
The prolific striker first followed up on his own rebound to fire past Simons from a slight angle. And before Cougars’ celebrations had muted Beach rose at the back post to head home Kor-von Tucker’s measured cross into the middle. Steede then grabbed his second goal of the match by slamming another Tucker cross into the roof of the net, leaving late substitute Reggie Baker to serve the last rites with a full-blooded blast from just outside the penalty area that beat Simons for pace.
Somerset Trojans 5Somerset Trojans took another step towards qualifying for a third cup final this season with this comfortable FA Cup quarter-final win over ten-men Ireland Rangers at Malabar.
Rangers’ afternoon got off to the worst possible start when ‘keeper Ricky Tucker was sent off after fouling last man Stephen Astwood, as the Trojans raced forward towards goal.
And things quickly went from bad to worse when Trojans skipper Jelani Scott converted the resulting penalty kick to give the visitors the early breakthrough.
Astwood then made it 2-0 when he casually slotted home Scott’s cross into the middle.
Rangers, however, hit back against the run of play with prolific striker Henry Santucci riding off a challenge before steering the ball past the advancing ‘keeper to reduce the deficit to one.
But Dion Stovell restored Trojans’ two-goal cushion just before half-time by side-footing Adolphus Lambert’s centre
Trojans super-sub Rodre (Piper) Wilson then made it 4-1 when he nodded home a well-weighted Stovell cross before Rangers’ player-president Duane (Box) Derosa scored an own goal that probably best summed up the home team’s outing.
PHC 2
Key West Rangers 0
<$>If teams were ever fined for repeatedly squandering golden opportunities in front of goal, then PHC Zebras would probably be filing for bankruptcy this morning. With their loyal spectators braving yesterday’s wet and rainy conditions to come out and support the nine-time FA Cup champions, the best Zebras could do was reward them with a sub-par display of finishing.
PHC’s youthful frontline had little trouble getting behind a lethargic Rangers defence, but unfortunately their finishing touch left much to be desired.
But thanks to second-half goals from Dennis Russell and skipper Blenn Bean, Zebras were able to get by a Rangers side reduced to ten men after midfielder Duval Binns was sent off for throwing an elbow in the face of Bean minutes before the half.
Devonshire Colts 4
(after extra time)First Division Devonshire Colts left it till late at Lords yesterday before pulling off the season’s first FA Cup upset.
Warriors and Colts remained deadlocked after 90 minutes after Fiqre Crockwell and Keimon Lawrence had traded goals.
However, Warriors were no match for a youthful Colts side in extra time as the visiting team found the back of the net with regularity.
Lozendro Symonds started the ball rolling when he restored Colts’ lead, before additional strikes from Ryan Nesbitt and Jordan Commissiong.
Warriors pulled one back via an own goal.
