Deloitte staff give back by getting out

Cooking meals, renovating a kitchen and weeding a church garden are not normally on the scheduled list of tasks for staff at Deloitte & Touche’s Bermuda office. But this year, as part of the firm’s annual Impact Day 80 staff members did just that and more, helping out a number of charities around the island.“This year we agreed to target numerous organisations in order to make best use of our different skill sets and interest levels,” said managing principal John Johnston. “It’s extremely rewarding to get into the community and make a difference and we encourage our staff to get involved throughout the year. Impact Day 2011 was a huge success for us our staff had fun working on teams, they built relationships in the community and most importantly made a difference. We are already looking forward to next year.”Impact Day is meant to be a celebration of Deloitte’s worldwide long-term commitment to community involvement. On Impact Day, they encourage all their staff to set aside their work for the day to contribute their time and talent to benefit local charities.Projects on this year’s Impact Day included renovating the kitchen at the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation (KAF), cleaning the PALS facility, organising toys at The Barn, weeding and planting a garden at Sandys 360.They also cooked and prepared meals for hundreds of people in the community at Meals on Wheels and the Eliza DoLittle Foundation. At St Peter’s church they cleaned the inside of the church and weeded and cleared the gardens outside. As part of ‘Buy Back Bermuda’, supported by The National Trust and The Bermuda Audubon Society, they pulled out evasive plants that were taking over the native plants on the Vesey Nature Reserve. They were supported by the Market Place, Intermezzo and Jennifer Pitcher at the Centre of Philanthropy.
