The Bermuda Pacers Track Club will add to their overseas track experiences when they compete for the first time in the Armory Youth Championships in New York City this weekend.

Sixteen athletes from the Pacers will leave for New York tomorrow and will compete in 36 individual events as well as a 4x200 metres relay at the Armory Track and Field Centre on Fort Washington Avenue. They will be accompanied by team officials and parents and return home on Tuesday.

“The club is extremely delighted to take a team to compete in the Armory Championships,” said coach Cal Simons who will accompany the team. “The Armory is one of the most symbolic indoor track locations in the United States and for us to run there is a privilege.

“It is also our hope that some of the athletes will reach the 2019 Carifta qualifying standards.”

The team will be led by distance runner Johndell Cumberbatch and long jumper Mikayla Tucker, both of whom are aiming to compete at the Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands. Cumberbatch, who qualified for Carifta in the 5,000 metres two weeks ago, will be competing in the 17-18 boys 800 and 1,600 metre events in the Armory Youth Championships, while Tucker, who is in school at Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, will compete in the 17-18 girls 200 and long jump.

Mikal Dill, another senior member of the team, will compete in the 200 metres and long jump.

In the 15-16 girls, the club will send Carifta hopefuls Sanaa Rae Morris, Keturah Bulford-Trott, Koa Goodchild, Jezhari Talbot, Nhaao Powell and Miniya Wainwright. They will compete in the 55, 200, 400 and 800 metres, high jump, long jump and 4x200 metres relay.

In the 15-16 boys division, the Pacers will be represented by Nirobi Smith-Mills, Sancho Smith, Kahzi Sealey and John Dickinson, all of whom are aiming to reach the qualifying standards for Carifta this year. The young men will compete in the 200, 400, 800, 3,000, 1,600 metres and high jump.

In the 13-14 boys, Denver Tucker will compete in the 55 metres, 200 metres, and long jump in his first time representing the club while Daylen Scott and J’Naz Richards are competing in the 11-12 boys and girls age group, in the 55 metres, 200 metres and long jump.
