Best among Cup Match players to be honoured
West Ham football star Clyde Best is among the former Cup Match cricket players who will be honoured at a luncheon this Sunday.The annual event sees players from both Somerset and St George’s recognised for their contributions in the classic.Besides Best, Somerset’s recipients this year are Stuart Durham, Gary Fray and Winston (Coe) Trott.The St. George’s players who will be honoured are Philip Smith, Vernon Foggo, Rupert (Nick) Hollis and Noel Gibbons.A special award will also be presented to ZBM’s Rick Richardson for his “outstanding service and being instrumental in broadcasting the Cup Match Classic for so many years.”Heritage Productions host what will be the seventh Annual Emancipation Celebration Awards Luncheon which will begin at 1.00 pm in the Dr. E. F. Gordon Hall of the Bermuda Industrial Union building on Union Street in Hamilton.Past recipients of the awards include John Stovell, Kenny Paul, the late Winton (Timmy) Edwards, Calvin (Bummy) Symonds, Sheridan Raynor, Rupert Scotland, Austin (Cheesey) Hughes, Dennis Wainwright, Eldon Raynor, Lee Raynor, Junius Durrant, Clarence Parfitt, Randolph Horton, Reggie Tucker and Kenny Cann.The Cup Match players are also recognised “for upholding and promoting Bermuda’s cultural heritage.”Tickets are on sale for $30.00 at Somerset CC, St. George’s CC, Brunswick Street Bakery (296-1442) and the Nu- Look Barber Shop (292-3041.)
