Defending champions Winchester Golf and Country Club II are the early leaders of the Easter Lily Invitational Women's Tournament after yesterday's

Winchester, led by local pro Janice Symonds and containing regular visitors Dottie Fulton, Joan Hartnett and Pam Johansen, lead second-placed Chaudiere Golf Club by a stroke with Team Slivinsky and Hyannis Golf club tied on 43.

Chaudiere are led by professional Danielle Nadon from Montreal, Canada. There are seven teams within six strokes of the lead.

Such was Hartnett's determination to play in this tournament that she spent the Christmas season in hospital having a hip replacement to ensure that she was able to make the trip.

In the gross division, Chaudiere are at seven-under-par 55 to hold a one-stroke lead over former champions Balustrol Golf Club, which is the home of this year's US Open. Balustrol are led by professional Cindy Ferro. Team Wilson are in third place, two strokes behind the leaders.

There was a scramble for the amateurs yesterday as the pros played their own balls. The team score was the better ball of the amateur and the pro ball, which resulted in low scores.

This format was an enjoyable entree to the tournament since today they will play a longer, tougher course at Port Royal GC. The tournament features a few former LPGA professionals who are now teaching pros at various country clubs across the United States, an indication of the tournament's appeal.

Nick Mansell captured the Belmont Club Championship on Saturday with a decisive four-and-three win over Bill Winstanley in the 36-hole final.

High winds permitting -- blowing at least 18 knots -- the regatta will take place this Saturday and Sunday, at Elbow Beach if the wind is out of the south and Long Bay in Somerset if there are northerly winds.

Sailors are urged to check at Sail On on Saturday morning for information on whether the race will be held. If the race is unable to be held on Saturday and Sunday it will be cancelled. The event is open to intermediate and advanced sailors and it is hoped that about 30 racers will compete.
