In celebration of their 30th anniversary, the Bermuda Regiment are kicking up their heels, or boots, while sponsoring the Inter Departmental soccer

Organiser Jack Castle, himself a former Bermuda international, said that the tournament was designed to highlight the Regiment as not solely a place where soldiers "march up and down doing drills'', but as one combining discipline with everyday life.

He added that it was also his intention to form a full-time squad that would play matches throughout the year and possibly even travel abroad during overseas camps.

Saturday's opening match will feature the men from Training Company against a team representing B Company at 2.30 p.m., while the second game at 4.30 p.m.

However, the soccer is just a part of the overall celebration which has various events such as a military tattoo, open house, raffles and senior citizens tea party -- all geared toward bringing the regiment closer to the public.

The Bermuda Football Referees Association will be sponsoring a referees course on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bermuda College's Robert's Avenue campus.

All registered linesmen, referees and those interested in learning more about refereeing are invited to attend.

Conducting the course will be former prominent local officials Carlyle Crockwell and Aldwyn Savery.

DARTS DRT The 33rd season of the Bermuda Ladies Darts League commences tomorrow, with eight of nine teams in action.

Defending champions BAA Whites will have an extra week to prepare for their defence as they have drawn a first-round bye.

Meanwhile, last year's runners up BAA Greens are set to take on BPSA, while other matches feature EEMYC facing St. George's D&SC, Mariners versus Royal Artillery Association and Moonglow against Hamilton Parish.

A similar format to last season will be used -- singles, doubles, trebles and 1001 -- with matches commencing at 8.30 p.m.

SOFTBALL SOF The Bermuda Commercial Softball League will be holding their annual general meeting today at the offices of Butterfield and Steinhoff -- located in the Vallis Building -- starting at 5.30 p.m.

CRICKET CRI St. George's will be having a training session for all area cricketers 21 years and under today at 5.30 p.m. at Wellington Oval.

The training will be geared for selection of a team to face Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club in the annual Colts Cup Match which begins at 11 a.m.
