Members of the Bermuda Karting Club will be looking for inspiration when they attend the Skusa SuperNationals — the Super Bowl of karting — in Las Vegas this weekend.

Held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, the event features the best drivers in the world in ten different classes with 80 karts in each. The top 40 karts in each class advance to the main event tomorrow.

About a dozen Bermudian drivers, including Scott Barnes, David Barbosa, Jeff Sousa, Shannon Caisey, Andrew De Costa and his two sons, Owen and Nathan, have made the trip.

Three Bermudians have raced at the event previously: Barnes, who placed on the podium in the shifters, Brandon Franks, who put himself on pole in the shifters, and Barbosa, who has competed in the Tag Seniors.

“It’s the Super Bowl of karting,” said Barnes, the former BKC president. “You get guys from all over the world racing and the competition is the best of the best.

“Guys like Michael Schumacher [a seven-times Formula One world champion], Scott Speed [the first American to race in F1]], and A.J. Allmendinger [a Nascar driver] have all raced in it.”

Barnes added: “As a past president and current driver, I’d always encourage more of our drivers to come and see that type of competition. It would be great if more of our drivers could come out and race in the SuperNats.”
