Young entrepreneurs at fever pitch

Providing opportunities: Madison Thompson and Natalie Calderon showcase “The Meal Deal” at the Youth Pitch preliminaries (Photograph supplied)

It’s crunch time tonight for young entrepreneurs who get five minutes each to pitch their business ideas before a panel of judges.

The good news for teen finalists Madison Thompson and Natalie Calderon, of Bermuda High School, and Andreaz Glasgow, of the Berkeley Institute, is that prize money and business support awaits both teams.

As Andreaz, 15, explained: “For the youth category, either way, if you don’t succeed you still succeed.”

For its second year, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation’s Rocket Pitch investment competition is including young people in the finals to get a share of $25,000 and services. The event at AXA XL runs from 5.30pm to 9pm and includes the two finalists from the Youth Pitch preliminaries last week.

Madison and Natalie pitched an app called “Meal Deal” that can help users keep track of items in their fridge — and notify them when they are running low.

The app informs users of stores nearby that stock the items, and carries details of when foods spoil.

Andreaz based his pitch, “Guess What”, on a tongue-twisting tablet that turns bitter and sour tastes into sweet for about 30 minutes.

The product can be used for private functions and fun competitions. Andreaz said that the BEDC had given him a “second home” with work space and advice and recommended young people interested in starting up business to call on its offices.

Last year’s Youth Rocket Pitch winner was Chaella Bradshaw-Douglas whose concept, “Good Chew”, was a healthy choice vending business to be directed at the island’s schools.

She said that coming top was “much more than just an achievement — the win provided me with opportunities, experiences and knowledge that I would not have if I hadn’t been courageous and entered”.
