Pond on the cusp of more glory
Micah Pond and her Brookhaven College team-mates will do battle with fierce conference and divisional rivals Richland College for the second time in six days today when the teams meet in the Region 5 District F final at Mountain View College.
Brookhaven clinched a second straight Dallas Athletic Conference title, Pond’s first as captain, after coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw away to Richland on Monday.
Pond and Co prevailed 1-0 in the first regular-season encounter last month.
Second-ranked Brookhaven, who ended the regular season with an overall 10-1-1 record, are the defending Region 5 District F champions going into the final against No 3 seeds Richland.
Robert Williams, the Brookhaven coach and former Devonshire Colts player, expects another close encounter, but is confident his players will be up to the task.
“The game will be a hotly contested one,” he said. “Both games against Richland this season have been close, so we know it’s going to come down to who wants it the most and who’s going to make the least amount of mistakes.
“I feel that our ladies will be up for it and will rise to the occasion.”
The winners will advance to the NJCAA Division III Women’s Championship, a title that Brookhaven also hold.
“We really want to defend our national title this year so the motivation is there,” Williams said. “It’s all about executing and achieving our preseason goal.”
Brookhaven advanced to the final after a convincing 4-1 win over Eastfield College on Thursday, with midfielder Pond getting an assist for her team’s second goal.
Pond, who plays in goal for the Bermuda women’s team, is a returning member from the Lady Bears squad that won both NJCAA Division III Women’s Championship and Region 5 MAC Conference for the first time last season.
