Weed is getting in the way of work – for some
T here are an estimated 1,500 Bermudians out of work, unemployed and allegedly in need of work. Well, I'm beginning to be convinced that not all of them want to work that badly, because there are a few jobs out there, available, that many Bermudians don't seem to want to do. More on this after the top 20.
Making the jump to the top is Why Don't You Love Me by Beyonce. Tumbling to #2 is Snoop Dogg's I Wanna Rock.
Leaping to #3 is Hard by Rihanna, the Bajan Bombshell. On the way up at #4 its Bedrock by Young Money featuring Lloyd. Falling to #5 is How Low by Ludacris.
Now some dance music. Up to #6 is Sexy Chick by David Guetta featuring Akon, a monster house jam. Climbing to #7 is Tik Tok by Ke$ha, Down to #8 is Say Aah by Trey Songz featuring Fabolous.
Improving to #9 is On To The Next One by Jay Z and Swizz Beats. Rude Boy by Rihanna, advances to #10. Improving to #11 is Everything To Me by Monica, a former essential new tune. Up to #12 is Say Something by Timbaland featuring Drake, last week's essential new jam. Tumbling to #13 is It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona, one of the hot ballads currently on the circuit. Falling to #14 is Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by the lovely Alicia Keys. Falling to #15 is Sex Therapy by Robin Thicke.
Improving to #16 is Hey Daddy, (Daddy's Home) by Usher featuring Plies. Slipping to #17 is She Wolf by Shakira. Falling to #18 is I Invented Sex by Trey Songz featuring Drake.
Up at #19 is Neighbors Know My Name by Trey Songz. On the way out at #20 is We Are The World, by Artists for Haiti. I only hope and pray that the situation in Haiti improves and that those displaced persons can find food, shelter, clothing and rebuild their lives.
Now back to this week's word unemployed or do they want to be unemployed! I ran into a young brother the other day and he told me that he still needs a job and is unemployed. He asked me if I knew of anything or had a job for him.
My first response was, "No brah; I don't know of anything". But then I thought about it and said to him, "Hey wait a minute big man. I know of three places that are hiring at this very moment the Bermuda Police Service, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and the Corrections Department!"
He said, "Oh yeah, I thought about that." But then he left me, not wishing to continue that conversation.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the problem. He didn't want to be a cop, a firefighter or a corrections officer! Yet he is unemployed! Well, how bad can his plight be? So yes we have a problem with many persons being unemployed but many of these persons only want a certain type of job. Or he didn't want to be labelled by his boys as a prick for the man. But guess what? His boys haven't found him a job and they are not paying his bills. Or he didn't want to stop smoking weed!
I'm here to tell you right now that if I was unemployed I would sign up for either of those services. The Police start with a base pay of some $65,000 to $70,000 per year, once you add up all the benefits, the housing allowance, etc., and that is not including the overtime, of which there is enough to pad that salary. And this is without a college degree. There are few jobs that allow you to have more impact into the problems in this country than being a police officer and now they are being paid a decent and attractive starting salary.
The reason why we have so many foreign nationals in key positions in the Bermuda Police Service is because young men like this gentlemen refuse to join the Police Service. I don't know how they can make being a police officer more attractive to Bermudians. This young fellow seemed smart enough to pass the educational requirements, but I submit that one of the problems is that many of our young people don't want to, "lay off the weed", as I quote Minister Burch!
So my people would rather smoke weed than have a job. Therein lies another problem! Absolutely insane, nonsense, silly, stupid and any other adjective you can conjure up for such a phenomenon.
Then there's the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service who for years couldn't recruit Bermudians but who thought they may have to recruit from overseas. What a great career; you get to fight fires, you get to keep fit, you learn to be an emergency medical technician, with skills that can save lives. They too recently were awarded a pay increase. Great pay, fantastic benefits, time off to do a second job or to just chill or spend quality time with family or self. Come on people, get real, this is a great career; but once again, you have to lay off the weed!
Lastly there's the Corrections Service who are also looking for officers. Another great career, with great starting salary and benefits, but once again my people have to stop smoking weed.
Regrettably, it is clear that so many Bermudians would rather smoke weed and/or use other drugs than work in any of these three services and this is why I say that many of these persons choose to be unemployed; because I'm certain that 300 of those persons who are unemployed could pass the academic entrance requirements of the Police, Fire and Corrections Services and 300 would more than fill the vacancies in all three services. But they would have to give up smoking marijuana and it seems like they don't want to give it up. Dummies
I don't feel sorry for anyone who is unemployed, who could pass the entrance requirements for any number of posts but simply choose weed over work. Dummies! Stay unemployed and don't ask me for help. Let me spend my time on somebody who is realistic, sensible, right thinking and is genuinely looking for work. Peace………………..DJLT.
