In celebration of St Peter’s 400 year history and recent renaming, the Masterworks Museum is hosting a special exhibit of art and artefacts from the church.St Peter’s: Their Majesties Chappell in St. George’s will feature historic works on loan and works for sale by local artists.The exhibit opens next week Friday and runs through August 29.The Queen officially bestowed St Peter’s Church with the title ‘Their Majesties Chappell’ earlier this year as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.Gillian Outerbridge, secretary of The Friends of St Peter’s Church and the exhibit co-ordinator, said of the pieces to be displayed: “We’ve been loaned really interesting historic works from the Bermuda National Museum, St George’s Historical Society, Fay and Geoffrey Elliott, the Spurling family and the Bermuda National Trust. These show the developing town with the church in the midst.“Particularly interesting is a depiction of the church signed by Carroll Thomas in 1936. I sent a copy of the painting and the signature to his gallery but they denied he ever visited Bermuda. Perhaps he had a secret life.”Aside from paintings featuring St Peter’s, the show will also exhibit artefacts and souvenirs documenting the church’s history.“On the pin board are old photographs and St Georgians will enjoy identifying themselves and neighbours in the old Sunday School photographs,” Ms Outerbridge said.“Apart from the pin board we have a scrap book for browsing which includes different aspects of the church, past and present.”St Peter’s is the oldest Anglican Church in the world outside the British Isles. It is also the oldest Protestant church in continuous use in the New World.St Peter’s still has an active congregation and more than 80,000 visitors come to the church every year.The exhibit will be officially opened with a 5.30pm reception on July 27.Brent Fortenberry, a PhD candidate at Boston University, will give a lecture, Of Cedar and Stone: St Peter’s Church, A History, at Masterworks on July 29 at 3pm.Masterworks asks that anyone who would like to attend call 299-4000 to reserve a spot.
