Which is worse, a hot dog or a hamburger?

Ideally you’d grill some fresh bell peppers, Portobello mushrooms and zucchini, but if real life means a hot dog or hamburger it’s most likely that the hot dog is the worst choice. Why?Hot dogs are typically extremely high in sodium (those in my fridge right now are boasting 640 mg of sodium per link!)High sodium in the blood can cause high blood pressure which puts you at increased risk for many chronic illnesses like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.Health coach Preston Ephraim II, said hot dogs are more unhealthy than hamburgers because they are made with a combination of meats and other ingredients which may even include fecal matter.“The meat, if you can call it that, that they put into hot dogs is always extremely poor quality, high in fat and sodium,” said Hannah Simpson, Clinical Dietitian at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH).“Hamburgers at least are made with just beef,” said Mr Ephraim. “If you are going to eat a hot dog make sure it’s all beef, all turkey or all pork so that you have a pure meat source,” he said. While agreeing that hot dogs have high sodium levels, he said eating beef poses its own concerns.“If I am going to eat a cow, there are so many aspects in the meat like antibiotics and hormones that will cause me more detriment than the sodium, but they are masked,” he said.“Those open and willing to make a change in their lives should opt for grass fed, free range animals that contain no antibiotics,” he added.
