Green Lantern building up for sale for $1.9 million

For just a little under $2 million, you could own the former home of iconic diner, The Green Lantern.The family owned and operated restaurant closed its doors in February after 70 years in business and is now up for sale for $1.9 million.Andre Woods, who owns the Serpentine Road property along with his mother, said at the time he was planning to sell the lot.The listing, with Bermuda Realty, states that the restaurant consists of a large entrance counter, two kitchens, dining area complete with tables and chairs, small dining area that is presently occupied by drink coolers and freezers, two half bath and storage room. The property also features three additional storage rooms and large freeze room located in basement, plus a large parking area on western side of restaurant for patrons only. In total, the restaurant encompasses 2,241 square feet of space and sits on .212 acres of land.When contacted by The Royal Gazette about the sale, Mr Woods had no comment.The diner opened on December 10, 1942, by Cyril and Bernice Burns and had carried on under the management of Mr Burns’ daughter Jan Swan, who is now retired and his grandson, Mr Woods.Mr Burns bought the building for £275 from Jos Brown after previously acquiring the business from William Steede and Faith Bassett-Steede.Under his ownership it has changed from a neighbourhood grocery store to meeting place and then to a fast food diner specialising in fish and chip suppers.Twelve jobs were lost when the diner closed.The closing came on the heels of several small business closures over the last six months, including A&J Sports Cards and The Christian Bookstore & Gift Centre, in the Washington Mall and a total of 36 jobs were to go with the closure of hedge fund manager Jupiter Asset Management (Bermuda) Ltd and hedge fund administrator, Bank of New York Mellon Alternative Investment Services.
