Swell time for West End Sailboat Club

There were plenty of trophies to go around when the West End Sailboat Club at Boaz Island held its annual prizegiving. And they did not all go to the perennial champions such as Gladwin Lambert, Stevie Dickinson, Rudy and Anthony Bailey, to name a few, who won the various club races and regattas with the East End Sail Boat Club and the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club, of North Shore, Devonshire.

Singled out for special recognition were a representative group of its up-and-coming 'junior crew', along with what Commodore Charles Gibson called the 'heavyweights' of years gone by such as Howard Lee, Howard Simmons, a commodore for 23 years, Leon Wilson, Audrey Todd, Colin Pearman, a non-sailing but highly-skilled club resource person, Quinton Talbot, who received life membership plaques, while special recognition was made of veterans Ainsby Perinchief and Bert Philpot.

The clubhouse was literally bursting at the seams with the large turnout of members and friends, including commodores from the three comet clubs, Sandys Boat Club and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's Ralph Richardson.

Wit and good humour marked the evening of reminiscences about what was a most exciting and productive year for West End Sailboat Club. Keynote speaker was Royal Gazette sports reporter Colin Thompson, who also presented the trophies.
