There are some jokes Greg Proops just will not make. When it comes to politicians however, it’s no holds barred.

“It’s my job to make fun of the people in power,” said the comedian, who has a list of names for US President Donald Trump: Mango Mussolini, Kremlin Controlled Carrot and Tangerine Tyrant.

“People say to me, ‘You should have lots of material from Trump’. I would rather not have some of the material he is giving us.

“It’s terrifying for the President of the United States to be bragging about the size of his nuclear button.”

His jokes aren’t all political. He’s made fun of how the British drive on the left side of the road, and even the Pilgrim Fathers.

Still, he admits to a few soft spots.

“I won’t punch down poor or homeless people,” he said. “I don’t make fun of women. I think sexist humour is repulsive. You will not get any ‘my wife is so fat’ jokes out of me.”

The 58-year-old will take the stage this week as part of Just for Laughs Bermuda.

His challenge will be to find something funny about the island although he isn’t too worried that his brand of humour won’t strike a chord.

“Wherever people speak English, they seem to get it,” he said.

Mr Proops got his break with the UK version of the television show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, back in 1989.

When it ended in 1999 he was hired to host the American version.

He also started touring extensively. Last month the Los Angeles resident performed in Manhattan twice, and also in India and San Francisco.

“I’m home for a short time and then my wife Jennifer and I come to Bermuda,” he said.

“It will be good fun — Bermuda is an island paradise and all that. I am looking forward to trying fish chowder.”

Although it will be his first performance here, he’s a Just for Laughs veteran.

“I auditioned for three years before I got in in 1993,” he said. “I thought it would be fun, like sleep away camp for comics.

“Since then I’ve probably performed with them more than 20 times.

I’ve performed with Ryan Stiles, I’ve performed on my own and I’ve done it with the cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway?”

He has done voice-overs for Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas, Bob the Builder and Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace.

His podcast is where he has discussed politics, current events and popular culture since 2010.

He named it The Smartest Man in the World because his friends tease him about being a know-it-all.

“The podcast is more me, less jokes,” he said.

“I think the more truthful and serious you are, the more people respond in this day and age.

“There are plenty of people not being very truthful.”

He fell in love with comedy in early childhood and started doing stand-up and performing in plays in high school.

As a theatre major at San Francisco State University, he joined an improv comedy group.

“They did a performance and asked people to come up,” he said.

“I went up on stage.

“I wasn’t nervous. You have that blind faith when you’re young. I did something about a wino and a Moonie at a bus stop. Afterward the improv group asked me to join.”
