Second Chewstick seminar on the music businesss to be held Sunday

Songwriter Richard Bassett will discuss international property rights and earnings in the second of a three-part seminar on songwriting at Chewstick.Songwriting Seminar Series Part II is entitled ‘Artists’ Rights, Protecting Your Songs & Earning Money from Music’ takes place on Sunday.Mr Bassett is president and founder of the Bermuda Songwriters’ Association. He is also president of Renascent Music Publishing (SOCAN).Chewstick director Gavin (Djata) Smith said: “Part II is aimed at empowering the artist in terms of knowing their rights, protecting their music and generating income from music.“It will cover ways to protect your music, abiding by international laws and best practices.“We will also discuss ‘local habits’ with regards to the use of songs, ie intellectual property in Bermuda and how these local practices contrast with international regulatory bodies, expectations and norms.“We will also discuss how to start earning money from your songs through placements in film, TV and other recording projects.“Mr. Bassett is well-versed in the nuances of songwriting. The wealth of knowledge and experience he has is an integral part to the usefulness of these seminars.“Songwriters of all ages, with an interest in all genres can benefit from any one of these seminars”No songwriting or vocal skills are necessary to participate, he added.Sunday’s seminar runs from 3pm to 5pm at the Chewstick Foundation headquarters on the corner of Elliott and Court Streets.A $30 fee is attached.
