Colts replace Trojans at the top

Spurred on by the Somerset Trojans' loss on Saturday night to Dandy Town and the opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the standings, Devonshire Colts put on a dazzling display yesterday at Frog Lane field as they beat out a spirited St. David's side.

Goal-scorers for Colts were Elington Weldon, Jay Bean and Craig Smith. while Del Hollis replied for St. David's who remain eighth ahead of St. George's only on goal average.

Opportunities to score early went begging as both teams had an array of good chances to score. However, neither side was able to cash in until the 12th minute of play when Colts scored their first goal.

Leonard Hypolite raced in and stole an outlet throw by St.David's goalkeeper Dale Fox and crossed the ball from deep on the right wing to Ellington Weldon who headed strongly past the 'keeper at the far post.

St. David's regrouped and tied up the score in the 30th minute when Sean Smith was able to shake his man down the right side and square the ball into the goalmouth. It should have been Colts 'keeper Andre Hendrickson's ball.

Instead, he allowed Del Hollis to intercept the ball from close in and Hollis wasted no time punching the ball home.

In the 36th minute of play, Quincey Aberdeen beat the offside trap after receiving a fine pass from Hypolite. The youngster streaked in on the 'keeper and with the option to shoot, he fed the ball across goal to an onrushing Jay Bean who fired a low hard shot just inside the post for Colts' second score.

St. David's held the upper hand for the remaining minutes of the half as they desperately sought the equaliser over a Colts side who were looking somewhat disorganised.

St. David's began the second half as they ended the first with some sharp, crisp passing and darting runs. In the 54th minute of play, Earlwin Wolffe headed a ball on to Hollis who beat his man and went in solo on the 'keeper and blasted his shot well over.

Colts were very unfortunate not to score on numerous opportunities in the second half. If not for the magnificent goalkeeping of Dale Fox, Colts might well have gone on a goal-scoring spree in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Fox's heroics kept St. David's in contention and they came awfully close to tying the game in the 73rd minute. Jerry Laws robbed Colts defender Chris Wright and rushed in on goal. With no one to beat but the 'keeper, Laws sent his shot wide of goal.

St. David's came close again to scoring when Sherwin Hollis was pulled down from behind for what looked to be a sure penalty. However, referee Roddy Burchall waved play on and Colts were spared.

Colts brought on Yul Wade in the 75th minute for Harrison Trott and immediately made his presence felt with some hard running and strong shots on goal.

Wade came close to scoring when, running across goal, he fired a shot from inside the six-yard box that just went wide of goal. Colts made another substitution bringing on Craig Smith for hard-working Jay Bean.

It proved to be another timely substitution as Smith got into the scoring act after receiving a quick short pass from Aberdeen on a corner kick. He carried into the penalty box, unchallenged, and fired a rocket past Fox to give Colts some breathing room from the pesky, always threatening, east-enders.
