A disqualified driver caught riding a motorcycle while impaired has been fined and taken off the roads for another 24 months.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Damen Mallory admitted having care and control of a vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

He also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, speeding, having no third party insurance and riding an unlicensed cycle.

The court heard that Mallory was clocked speeding at 56km/h while using a handheld device by police officers on South Road in Smith’s on April 1.

When he was stopped, he told officers that he was heading home and was just checking the time. He also told them that he was “off the road”, had just bought the bike and was picking it up.

Officers noticed that he appeared to be intoxicated and when asked if he’d been drinking, he replied: “Yes, I had about three drinks — I wasn’t there long.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed him a $1,200 fine for driving while impaired and banned him from the roads for 18 months consecutive to his current disqualification, which ends in March next year.

He also added a six-month consecutive ban for driving while disqualified and fined him another $1,000 for the offence.

Mallory was also fined $1,000 for having no insurance, $250 for the unlicensed cycle and $200 for speeding.
