Denied Burch up for the fight
Independent electoral hopeful David Burch may have been turned away at nomination day — but Mr Burch declared last night his fight is far from over.
Mr Burch, a would-be candidate for Warwick South Central, paid his $250 fee, but is now seeking legal advice, saying his documents were unfairly turned down by parliamentary officers on Tuesday. Contenders require one name proposing them, and another to second them, he said.
Mr Burch’s first name was declined as a non-registered person, but he had brought along another name as back-up, which he said was rejected. “Their argument was that I have to have both names on the same paper,” Mr Burch added. “But there is nothing in writing that says so. I feel I have a recourse, and my lawyer agrees. People have put me down, saying I was the most vocal candidate but I didn’t have my ducks in a row. But the mistake was on them.”
