The Bookmart in the Phoenix Centre has a wide variety of such books, from the `how to' for the competitor seeking to improve in his or her sport, to those simply wanting to be better informed. One of the most attractive buys is a book entitled Sports by noted American sports photographer Neil Leifer with Michael Jordan on the cover. The book is a bit on the costly side at $61.65 but with close to 200 photo pages containing the work of the longtime Sports Illustrated photographer, the book looks a good investment. Many sports are featured, including one of Leifer's favourite sports, boxing. On the topic of boxing there is a book on the sport called the Chronicle of Boxing by Stanley Weston and published by The Ring magazine. Every world championship fight from the turn of the century is featured in an article and there are 700 magnificent black and white photos of some of the legendary fighters and fights. This would be a popular gift for the boxing fan, costing $44.45. The book has 350 pages. A number of sports are represented in the sports section at the Bookmart, with golf having the Encyclopaedia of Golf by Malcolm Campbell which contains a foreword by golfer Tom Watson. It is published in England and the 320 pages book which contains splendid photos of various courses as well as illustrations sells for $55.50. Watson also has a book on golf dealing with getting back to the basics of the sports. Also on golf, there is another hardback encyclopaedia type book and another containing tips for the senior golfer which sells for $28.85. There is a 1994 Golfer's Handbook which has a massive 888 pages and costs $39.95. Cricket and soccer, Bermuda's two national sports are well represented, from Mal colm Marshall's (the former West Indies Test bowler) book on bowling and fielding skills.

Marshall is the leading wicket-taker in Tests for the West Indies and his reputation as a bowler is well respected, having also played a number of years in England. The book sells for $17.75.

The Daily Telegraph's Chronicle of Cricket covers over 100 years of cricket in England in a series of articles. The book has 250 pages and sells for $39.95, a good buy.

A cricket umpiring and scoring book by Tom Smith of the Association of Cricket Umpires would make another excellent gift for the player and spectator alike, costing just $11.25.

Hamlyn has published a Book of Football which covers technique and tactics, costing $13.35 while the book on soccer skills and drills ($19.25) would be a good gift for the young player.

Soccer Techniques by Gerhard Bauer, relating to tactics and teamwork and introduced by former West Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer is another good idea for a gift for the youngster.

It costs $24.95 and has 157 pages.

Books available for sports buffs horse lover, a 225 page collection of black and white and colour photos by British sports photographer Gerry Granham and one of the sports leading journalists, Richard Pitman. The cost of the book is $52.60. There are a couple of karate books in the section, both by J. Allen Queen, one a hardback ($28.85) and a paperback which sells for $10.95. A book catering to health and fitness called Body, Mind and Sport , a guide to lifelong fitness, is selling for $29.95. How to train for and run your best Marathon should have some interest for the local runner who is preparing for the upcoming Marathon. This are tips for the first timers, relating to workouts and pacing as well as advice for experienced participants on setting a goal and achieving a personal best.
