Check this list to know you are hurricane ready
* Water — at least one gallon daily per person for three to seven days
* Food — at least enough for three to seven days:
non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
foods for infants or the elderly
snack foods
non-electric can opener
cooking tools / fuel
paper plates / plastic utensils
* Blankets / Pillows, etc.
* Clothing — seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
* First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs — if you suffer from asthma or you have diabetes, be sure to stock up on inhalers and insulin. Also, read our article on page 15
* Special Items — for babies and the elderly
* Cooler box (it can be useful to have a cooler box stocked up with ice to save items in your fridge and freezer)
* Toiletries / Female hygiene items/ Moisture wipes
* Flashlight and candles (soya candles burn clean and don't aggravate allergies or asthma) NEVER leave candles unattended.
* Batteries (if you use rechargeable batteries, make sure you also have some "normal" alkaline batteries in case the power goes off for a few days.)
* Radio — Battery operated
* Telephones — Fully charged cell phone with an extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
* Money - Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards — Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
* Keys
* Toys, Books and Games
* Bucket and rope (you might need to use the bucket to draw water from your water tank if the power goes out and your pump no longer works)
* Important documents — in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag:
insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, passports, etc.
* Tools — keep a set with you during the storm, including some nails and a coil of rope
* Vehicle fuel tanks filled. Also additional fuel for your generator. Remember, do not keep these fuel containers inside your home. Instead keep them in the garage or secure shed.
* Pet care items:
proper identification / immunization records / medications
ample supply of food and water
a carrier or cage
muzzle and leash
