Assistant Underwriter
ACE Bermuda Insurance Limited
"I am a really inquisitive person."
Leticia Alleyne attended Temple University in Philadelphia where she earned a bachelor's of Business Administration with a double major in Risk Management and Insurance & Finance. She has also received the ARe (Associate in Reinsurance) designation and obtained the CPCU designation last.
After high school Ms Alleyne wasn't sure what she wanted to study beyond business. She recognised insurance as a growing industry in Bermuda and used the networking opportunities presented at the Career Fairs to gain further insight. She followed this up with formal and informal programmes such as summer internships and the BFIS mentorship programme and decided that insurance was the right career choice.
"My job entails reviewing a client's information and producing a detailed operational and risk analysis to be presented and discussed with the underwriter. Additionally, I assist the underwriter in determining the price and coverage terms for the insurance placement which is based on the following: account review of the risk exposures, sophisticated actuarial pricing models, and peer comparisons."
Ms Alleyne says her analytical skills are particularly useful as are her communication and interpersonal skills because her work involves interacting with brokers and other insurance professionals.
"I like to understand the various components of an organisation. This has been beneficial in terms of understanding our client's business operations and in continuing my education. ACE is a company that encourages its staff to continually develop new skills and tools."
"I think most people would assume that working at an insurance company would be a monotonous and boring job however this is far from the truth as there are no two days alike."
She says that, believe it or not, all her high school subjects have been helpful in underwriting: "Science and how things work, English in terms of writing underwriting analysis and even Maths in calculating premiums to charge our clients have been critical."
