Nicola Feldman, Habitat for Humanity<b/>
In April of 2000 Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda became a registered charity and an affiliate of international non-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity.
Much like Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat for Humanity Bermuda's stated mission "is to assist those living in derelict conditions to make home improvements that will ensure that every Bermudian may live in a safe, secure and healthy home."
Without the efforts of staunch volunteers like Nicola Feldman, Habitat for Humanity Bermuda would not be able to accomplish their noble goals.
"I started working with Habitat in September of 2009," says Ms Feldman. "I am a project manager here and my primary role is to help run the administration. I also check out the potential houses we will work on and then put a plan and letter together to try and attract sponsors from businesses and construction companies to help fund the projects."
With over 60,000 people living on 14,300 acres of land in Bermuda Ms Feldman recognises the necessity to help those in need.
"I was inspired to work with Habitat Bermuda because it's an important organisation and housing is such a big problem," she explains. "We don't construct full houses, but we try to work with families and make small improvements which can make a big impact on the quality of their lives.
"I think it's important for people to volunteer their time because Bermuda is a very lucky place. If you are able to share in the wealth on the Island it's important to give back because not everyone can. We are always looking for volunteer skilled labourers to give some of their time."
Ms Feldman notes that there is a memorable moment at every project and says: "The gratitude each family expresses is heart warming. I've been equally touched by each project I've worked on."
