Owners say business model will weather economic storm

Photo providedThe island's first self-storage facility allows people 24-hour access to a personal 120 square foot storage area.

It may seem like a risky time to embark on such an endeavour such as Bedrock Secure Self Storage but the owners, Andrew Lewis and David Bull, have adopted a pragmatic approach.

The two plan to keep overhead costs very low and will not be hiring any other staff. In spite of this they see the self storage concept becoming very popular locally as the worldwide recession deepens.

"Bermuda is going to feel the impacts of the worldwide recession very soon. I think a lot of us will start renting smaller homes or offices and we believe downsizing is a trend which will continue," says Mr Lewis. "There has been a definite downturn recently which, in the construction business, we have all noticed."

Some weeks are busier than others.

"We know in the rental and storage business not every day is a renting day. A couple of weeks ago we had a good week then it went a bit quiet. It all depends on what people's needs are and what they can afford," adds Mr. Bull.

"Our theory, long term, is that we are in the right market but this is just the start. Once we test the market we will build new units depending on the demand."

Mr. Bull contributes over 20 years of expertise in technical installation work. He was employed by Shell Oil for 13 years as a Service Manager.

Such knowledge was indispensable when setting up Bedrock's interiors states Mr. Lewis.

"We both input our resources, we can take on anything and in the past we have done contract work successfully. I do the construction side and (Mr. Bull's) guys do the welding, steel and interior work."

Office Manager Arthur Cordeiro has known the owners since his youth and began working for Ray Brothers in the 1980s. He has worked for HWP and most recently at P-Tech where he helped to manage the company's customer service operations.

"People have been very receptive to the idea of 24 hour access, they like it because they can come on their own time. I enjoy working with people and I like to make them feel comfortable. It's enjoyable when you are able to build trust with a client."

In early summer construction is due to begin on expanding the storage facility. Eventually Mr. Bull and Mr. Lewis envision renting out 53 units.

Energy, commitment and motivation sum up Bedrock's business philosophy. Mr. Lewis notes, "We've been in business before and we are comfortable together, we thought it was a great time to jump on the opportunity."
