Telephone tips when calling in an emergency

Body & Soul spoke with the emergency medical technician team of David Pilgrim, Walter Brangman, Mark Tailford and Shirlene Furbert, and their clinical nurse manager April Smith. They offered the following tips to the public to aid response time when calling in an emergency:1. Give your name your phone number and name of the injured party.2. If you know the injury state it eg suspected heart attack, stabbing etc.3. Give full directions to the scene. Ambulance drivers do not know every road on the Island so explain in detail exactly where you are. Use landmarks in giving the directions. “You have to be specific with directions,” said Ms Smith. “For example there are two Sleepy Hollow roads and two Khyber Passes, one in Warwick and one in St George's.“4. If the injured party is obese say so. This enables EMTs to take an extra person to help lift the patient. Almost one-third of the population is overweight and local EMTs report increasingly it's a problem they encounter at the scene.5. If it's dark, leave on an outside light.
