No need for filling in dentist numbers, Government clarifies
There isn't a shortage of dentists on the Island, however some practitioners have stopped accepting new patients, according to Government.
Those in need of a dentist can visit the Dental Board website www.bermudadental.bm which lists practitioners able to take on more clients.
Government's clarification came in response to last week's Body & Soul article 'Shortage of dentists at root of their worries'.
In the article retired dentist Duncan Moran said he felt there was a significant shortage of dentists due in part to the Dental Board interfering in Immigration matters.
A response from the Ministry was sought but was received after press time.
The following comments have since come from a spokesperson from the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing.
It said: "The Department of Immigration has a legislated duty to consult with registration councils. The Dental Board is the council responsible for registering dentists, dental hygienists and other dental professionals.
"The Dental Board, like the other registration councils, will also advise the Department on whether (1) there are Bermudian dentists available (2) whether those Bermudians will be disadvantaged by the granting of a work permit.
"The Department cannot issue a work permit for an applicant who is not eligible to be registered and will not issue a work permit where Bermudians or other Bermudian businesses may be disadvantaged."
