Harvard doctor to speak at cancer forum

A Harvard University doctor will be the guest speaker at the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s annual cancer forum.Julie Silver will give “an inspiring and powerful message that focuses on healthy lifestyle choices and healing, as well as personal and professional success”, according to forum organisers.Dr Silver is a breast cancer survivor.In 2009 statistics from the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital showed breast cancer represented a third of all local cancers.Dr Silver is to present a “full picture” of the services available on the Island for detection, diagnosis, treatment, care, and support at the March 12 forum.She is currently works as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School.An award-winning author, Dr Silver has edited/written more than 20 books that focus on rehabilitation medicine and physical recovery.She has a special interest in oncology rehabilitation and is currently on medical staffs of several major hospitals including Brigham and Womens, Massachusetts General, Spaulding and UMass Memorial.Dr Silver is also the chief editor of books at Harvard Health Publications (the consumer health branch of Harvard Medical School) and a founder of Oncology Rehab Partners a health care company dedicated to helping hospitals and cancer centres develop and implement oncology rehab services through the STAR (survivorship training and rehabilitation) products.The free forum will take place at City Hall from 9am to 3pm.Over 15 organisations will be on hand to exhibit their services and/or products.
