Many working mothers in Bermuda want to breastfeed their babies but find it challenging once they return to work.The number one challenge they face is finding a clean, private place where they can sit for 20 minutes and express (pump) the milk from their breasts.In fact, the demand surprised breast-feeding advocate group La Leche League of Bermuda. The charity decided to organise bi-monthly meetings for working mothers who want to breastfeed. It was felt the meetings would help La Leche League leaders better serve women in their efforts to breastfeed. Local insurance company Argus provided a venue.The first meeting took place last Thursday. A spokesperson for La Leche League said: “We thought maybe five or six women would attend and we ended up with over 20 people. Clearly, there is a huge need to support working mothers.”The next meeting will be in May. The Bermuda Department of Health recommends all mothers who are able to do so should breastfeed their babies. The maternity ward of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, in keeping with standards of the World Health Organization, also steers new mothers to breastfeed.
