The best airports

A plane takes off from London's Heathrow airport

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel not a destination,” says Roy M Goodman.Yeah, Mr Goodman. Well have you been delayed five hours when your friends are waiting for you in Boston? Friends you cannot contact? Or what about the friends who are also going to meet you in Vermont at the same time? Yes, Mr Goodman, happiness might be your way of travel, but happiness and travel are not always linked. And definitely not when I got delayed for five hours at LF Wade International Airport in December. Happiness and travel might as well be at either ends of the Island.A delay flying to Boston in December, as aggravating as it can be, should be expected. Snow ... of course. But a delay at the end of March for a Toronto flight when two weeks had produced warm temperatures and spring flowers and then it snows? Slightly higher on the maddening scale. Especially when you’re a seasoned traveller and you run like a chicken to catch the flight and never check the schedule. Oops (and wait for that trip next week!).Of course there is one way to skip delays in Bermuda (and, well every other airport, but not always possible if you are waking at 2am in India and need the airport): check the helpful airport website: www.bermudaairport.com.If you do, however, find yourself delayed by the likes of a snow storm I would suggest going with it. Relax. No-one is going anywhere so there is very little point in stressing about it. Make it easier on yourself and ensure you: charge your iPod/computer and have a book/magazine you can stand reading while you wait. Of course you know that there is free WiFi at Bermuda’s airport so work or play, the WiFi will give you something to do.Sure the LF Wade Airport will be the first, but it definitely will not be the last airport we as travellers will experience. (Or so we all hope as we board the tin boxes. Sorry, too morbid for a Wednesday?)And airports are getting hip to the fact that travellers have sometimes been voyaging for a long stretch (36 hours anyone?) and will demand more from their pit stops. So where are the best airports? Where should you make sure you fly through? Well Skytrax, an online travel opinion site, annually produces the World Airport Awards. These awards look at 240 airports worldwide. They get feedback from more than 11 million people of 100 different nationalities and focus on 39 areas of concern. Concern? Everything from check-in to arrivals, transfers and departure. The awards have been running since 1999. Number one airport this year? Hong Kong’s International Airport (www.hongkongairport.com)! Who knew? Well 11 million people, or so, I guess.I can see what they are saying ... bored in Hong Kong’s airport? Why not play golf? Yes, they have a golf course. Oh, did I mention the 4D theatre, a sky pier to take the ferry into Hong Kong or the mad variety of shops? Make sure you check the website for deals before you arrive! Heck I want to visit Hong Kong just for the airport, now!Second on the list? Singapore’s Changi Airport (changiairport.com), which I have visited! WiFi that would make anyone happy! But also shopping to your heart’s content and of course a movie theatre! Need some sleep? Rent a cubicle-style room for an hour or longer. Need a run? Shower?Sure they have those facilities in the airport too! What does it say when you can visit an airport’s website and actually have to pare-down the type of shops you are looking for? I’m not even a shopper!Number Three? Incheon International Airport in South Korea which also boasts a golf course, a spa, ice skating rink, private sleeping rooms, a casino, indoor gardens and a Museum of Korean Culture. How can anyone else compete with these three giants?Well, others haven’t given up and following these gourmet airport selections are Munich’s airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, the Zurich Airport, Auckland International Airport and finally Copenhagen’s Airport.Nope, there was not one American airport listed in the top ten nor one from the United Kingdom. Some airports in these countries fared well in other categories, however. London Stansted was awarded Best Airport for Low-Cost Carriers and Heathrow was called the Best Airport for Shopping (go figure after the South Korean, Singapore and Hong Kong lists?).Now if I were to place an airport on my own personal “best” list I would have added Dallas’ airport which kept me entertained for hours with shopping while I waited, and then slept, through my flight to Santiago, Chile. Oops.Of course when I woke up and realised my mistake, I scurried to the American Airlines desk where the nice man behind the counter comped me a room, moved me to the flight the next day and gave me breakfast and lunch! Nothing beats an airport with good customer service above and beyond the bells and whistles.Sure whistles are fun, but when you have been travelling for 36 hours and you don’t need to see one more Starbucks and you’re hoping to be away from the internet so no one can reach you, these conveniences are ... well nothing compared to a friendly face who appreciates what you are going through and helps you out. That is happiness during travel! What’s your favourite airport? Think you know a better one? Visit my website www.robynswanderings.com and tell me which one you think was missed on this list. And next week? Well get back on that plane ... we’re going to Toronto for 24 hours!
