Special guest: Bermudian Joan Dismont shares a moment with Oprah Winfrey after the television great’s Farewell Spectacular. Mrs Dismont and five other Bermudians were special guests of Oprah’s companion Steadman Graham at the event last week. Mr Graham, who has been a major supporter of the Family Centre in Bermuda, of which Mrs Dismont’s daughter-in-law Martha is executive director, provided them with a suit at the show at Chicago’s United Center and also invited them to the exclusive after party which took place after the show.

While a record-breaking worldwide television audience of millions could only tune in vicariously to Oprah Winfrey’s Farewell Spectacular a week ago, a posse of six Bermudians were there in person at the United Center in Chicago applauding the legend as she took her final bow.Not only did they have their own suite at the spectacular, they were among the 500 special guests at the fabulous after-show party at the Four Seasons Hotel. Oprah took time out to meet and greet the Bermudians who themselves were special guests of her partner Stedman Graham. He went out of his way to ensure his Bermudian friends were well feted. For more than a decade Mr Graham has taken a special interest in the work of Martha Dismont, executive director of The Family Centre the registered Bermuda charity that is committed to making a difference through their professional programmes for children and families exposed to domestic violence and exposure to alcohol and drug abuse.Among other things, Mr Graham, in his own inimitable style, has hosted two celebrity golf tournaments for the benefit of “The Family”. He has attended their annual general meetings, and facilitated workshops for local teens and families.Stedman “just treated us phenomenally” this time around, Mrs Dismont said. Her sentiments were echoed by her travelling companions who included her mother-in-law Joan Dismont, the latter’s daughters Michelle Dismont-Frazzoni and Kari Dismont, cousin Ianthia Simmons-Wade and friend Albey DeSilva.Michelle Dismont took full advantage of her photo-journalistic talents to document their involvement at the Oprah Spectacular where the show took place and at the after-show-party.She is photo librarian and a photographer in Government’s Department of Communications and Information. Her 80-year-old mother Joan has her own fascinating reputation as one of the stars of the The Saint James Stage Group and the Terpsichorean Dance Team of the Pembroke Community Club. Joan was caught by her daughter dancing up a storm to the music at the after-party, and engaging such celebrities as Jamie Foxx, Tom Hanks and Aretha Franklin, and “sharing a bit of Bermuda”.This was the first year that Joan did not participate in TheEnd-to-End Charity Walk. Instead she only walked halfway from Hamilton to Dockyard because her bereavement over last rites for a family member. However, she was unavoidably absent from an encore performance Saturday night of the Stage Group at the Ruth Seaton Memorial Theatre because from Chicago, Joan and friends travelled to Georgia for the graduation of her grandchild.
