How much sleep do children need?

Most people seem to think eight hours of sleep is what adults and school-aged children should get but according to sleep researchers children need more.

How much more? According to the Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic in Britain, which is one of the world’s leading sleep centres for children, the amount of sleep required varies with age.

The British National Health Service has also adopted their recommendations.

It’s important to note that naps and catching up on sleep during weekends is not considered proper sleep according to the experts.

They say children should have the following number of hours of sleep every night:

5 years

Ÿ night time: 11 hours

6 years

Ÿ night time: 10.75 hours

7 years

Ÿ night time: 10.5 hours

8 years

Ÿ night time: 10.25 hours

9 years

Ÿ night time: ten hours

Ten years

Ÿ night time: 9.75 hours

11 years

Ÿ night time: 9.5 hours

12 years

Ÿ night time: 9.25 hours

13 years

Ÿ night time: 9.25 hours

14 years

Ÿ night time: 9 hours

15 years

Ÿ night time: 8.75 hours

16 years

Ÿ night time: 8.5 hours
