'Lady in Red' turns 90 in style
There wasn’t a dull moment a week ago when Mrs Phyllis Samuels was given a surprise 90th birthday party at the Visitors Centre of the Botanical Centre.Known as “The Lady in Red”, Phyllis, who stands just over four feet tall, even when wearing her dainty red shoes, was in an enviable and privileged position having her party hosted by two of the top entertainers in the country, nightclub owner and operator Wendell (Shine) Hayward and comedian Nadanja. The pair are nephews of Mrs Samuels, and they were on their Sunday-best behaviour, ensuring that nothing music-wise or otherwise violated her deeply religious sensitivities. Maybe they took their cue from assistant emcee, Wendell’s sister Sharon Hayward. She is a teacher at the Adult Education School and a worship leader at Shekinah Worship Centre where their aunt serves in the church’s intercessory department. The only music that seemed to be with a non-religious strain, was Shine’s rendition for a sing-along of “I Just Want to Say I Love You”. There was liturgical dancing by Janice Battersbee, lively no-money-involved “purse-bingo” and a guessing game about the characteristics that make up Phyllis Samuels as a wife and mother as well as her motivating scriptures. There was also an audio-visual presentation showing the birthday girl as the best dressed, pert younger lady on the block. The food was good and so was the fellowship, accentuated by tributes from her pastor the Rev Dr Maria Seaman, and family and friends hailing her as unforgettable, magnificent and proof to the younger generation that God is a keeper.
