The HPV vaccines

There are two different vaccines against HPV, and both are available in Bermuda. They are available at the Department of Health, and from paediatricians’ and general practitioners’ (GPs’) offices. Both vaccines will protect against the high-risk HPV types 16 and 18, which cause 70 percent of HPV-related cervical cancers.Cervarix was developed as a vaccine against cervical cancer, and is approved for use only in girls.Gardasil protects against the high-risk HPV types, but also against types six and 11, which cause genital warts and benign tumours in the throat. These low-risk types do not cause cancers. This vaccine is approved for use in boys and girls.
