A place for pet lovers A new website for people and their animals
The icon for the pet-focused website Fetchfido is a goofy looking dog, but the idea for it actually started with a lost cat.“I decided to set up the website because I met a cat,” said website designer Krystal Outerbridge. “A cat came to my back door. He was extremely skinny, but still looked healthy.”She debated whether to feed it or not, but being a sucker for animals, gave in. The cat, now named Soldier, lives with Miss Outerbridge and her three other cats Missy, Butter and Scotch.“I was watching him and thinking this could be someone’s cat,” she said. “A lot of cats get abandoned or just run away from home. I was wondering how could I let someone know I had their cat.”She believed tacking signs to poles or putting up notices in veterinarians’ offices were inefficient ways to find your lost pet. She thought a website might be a better way of reaching more people, faster.“It started from there,” she said. “Then I said, well people post notices of pets looking for homes or litters for sale. Then I thought I’d put other things on the website like pet events and pet-centred businesses.”Added the former Ontario College of Art and Design graphic arts student: “I never thought I was going to be in an office for the next 30 years until retirement. I always felt like I was destined to do something greater. I wanted to create my own brand like I did in my college classes.”For three years she dreamed about setting up her website but did little about it because she was busy working as a graphic designer. Then she was made redundant in January.“The economy is bad, and not many companies are not looking to hire graphic designers right now,” she said. “So I said ‘I have the time and money right now, let me put this dream into action’. I started to do the website. Last June I found this company called Advance Services. They were really nice people and helped me execute it. I didn’t get it completed for maybe a year because I was so picky on the design. I kept on changing it. It had to be perfect.”She launched Fetchfido the Facebook page several months ago and has about 180 Facebook followers. The Facebook page has become the place for Bermuda pet owners to network with other pet owners. She launched the website last month and hopes to one day add small publications that can be read in veterinarians’ office and maybe hold events for pets and their owners.“Right now I am just trying to generate interest,” she said. “I want to let people know I am out there. I deliberately didn’t choose a name with ‘Bermuda’ in it. I am hoping that it might eventually have international appeal.”She also wants her website to act as a conduit for animal advocacy.“Before I started my website I felt like there was no place for pet lovers in Bermuda,” she said. “I want to be the voice that pets don’t have, especially when it is a lost dog or abusive situation. I want to give people a voice and give animals a voice.”Miss Outerbridge hoped that animal welfare organisations such as the SPCA and the Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau (BFAB) would use her website to post notices of events. For more information see her on Facebook under Fetchfido or www.fetchfido.bm.
