Think moustache think men’s health

Okay residents, the Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre is giving every man a month to ponder the notion of growing a moustache.Although it’s now Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the local charity is gearing up for its awareness campaign for men in November.“Movember is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun and doing it for a serious cause; this includes diabetes, heart disease and male cancers,” said charity spokeswoman Deborah Titterton Narraway.“Mo Bros commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember, and in doing so become walking and talking billboards for the cause.“The moustache is our ribbon, the symbol by which we generate conversations, awareness and raise funds for men’s health.”This year the campaign theme is Movember & Sons and looks at what it means to be a better man.“Knowledge shared from one generation to the next and wisdom passed down by one’s dad or father figure, plays a meaningful role in shaping who we become.“This learning continues throughout life, but also reaches a point at which the exchange is reversed and insight is passed back up the chain,” said Ms Titterton Narraway.“The collective knowledge of generations gives us great power to avoid mistakes of the past, plan thoughtfully for the future and to become the best version of one’s self.”The campaign will encourage all men to learn their family health history, particularly to learn and understand what conditions they are at increased risk of developing.Men will also be encouraged to share their knowledge with family members and friends.“These simple actions can have a significant impact of the quality and longevity of your journey through this life,” said Ms Titterton Narraway.Individuals or teams can take part in the event.Sign up online, www.movember.bm, or telephone 236-1001.All money raised in this event goes exclusively to men’s health programmes.
